Great Contractors!!!

Greg and Tate are wonderful! I’ve used them for several medium-sized jobs (2 bathroom remodels that involved moving walls, a paneled library, and a porte cochere addition), and they have done a great job every time. They listen to what you want and do the job right. When the inevitable little problems have cropped up, they have fixed them immediately and without a complaint. I’ve heard so many terrible stories about bad surprises people have had working with other contractors, but I’ve never had a bad surprise from Penn Carpentry. And Greg and Tate are both really nice people who are pleasant to work with. They do the job for a fair price, and they do it right.

Greg and Tate are just the best!Easy to work with and always pleasant. We had a large remodeling job done and they came through with everything. They made me feel comfortable and explained anything I didn’t understand. They are honest, they always return calls promptly, they watch over all their sub-contractors to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to and they stand by their work, and clean up. It has been 3 years and I can still call them with questions and get recommendations from them. As another reviewer said, they are both just really nice guys who know what they are doing. What more could you want? They were highly recommended by our well- known architect (don’t know if I can say his name as I’ve never written a review?) but as he only gave us two names that says a lot in itself. There were no surprises which was also wonderful. I would and do recommend them as they stand by their work.

We have done two separate projects with Penn Carpentry: a house addition and a bathroom renovation. Both were done with great workmanship and attention to detail (and on schedule). Overall, a very positive experience and would recommend them to others.

Only Contractor in Atlanta I Would Work With

I have hired Penn to build additions to two of my  homes. He delivered quality work at an affordable price, stayed within budget, was conscientious of his work and made every effort to ensure our happiness. His creative input was tasteful and appreciated. Years later, when a tree crashed through our roof, he dealt directly with our insurance company and eliminated the hassle. He worked with us on the price, and once felt compelled to swallow a loss when we picked the wrong bricks. He has always been honest and kept us in the loop regarding schedule and budget. I felt like we were getting OTP prices in an in town neighborhood. I have referred Penn to many friends and he is the only Atlanta contractor I would consider working with.

These folks are great to work with!

We’ve used Penn for two renovations and would recommend them without hesitation.  They are reliable, knowledgeable, accurate in their cost estimates, and their work is very high quality.  They worked hard to finish the jobs when they said they would.  The only times we went over budget was when we (the homeowner) made changes to materials or fixtures that were more expensive than those used for the estimates.  Penn’s subcontractors have been carefully vetted; they are also outstanding.  I always felt comfortable having them at the house, even when I wasn’t there.

Excellent Value for Honest Contractors

We highly recommend Penn Carpentry for their attention to detail, quality of work and value for the money.  We used Penn Carpentry to build an addition to our 1920’s house, and Greg Penn oversaw the project.  Our project took 6 months to complete and Greg worked closely with us to ensure we were satisfied with the progress and overall outcome.  Their subcontractors are very good, work well between the trades, take pride in their work, and have worked with Greg for a while.

Greg is very detailed oriented and pointed out work to be redone even before we noticed, and was open to re-work if we were not satisfied.

Our project included 12 months of maintenance after our move-in, and Greg has been responsive in addressing the items requiring attention after move-in.  We also felt comfortable leaving the house while the trades were present and letting them lock up after they finished.  Excellent guys to work with.

Great to work with!

Penn Carpentry offers fabulous service and they are great to work with.  They are so easy to work with and are hardworking and knowledgeable.  I can’t imagine our building project with their most valuable input!

Highly Recommend

We highly recommend Greg Penn and Penn Carpentry.  They created a wonderful basement playroom space for us out of a scary and debilitated crawl space in our 1917 in town bungalow, turning it into a much nicer area than we thought could ever be possible. Greg rigorously adhered to the agreed upon budget and schedule, and we had no bad surprises (only good surprises). When a worker left a nail in our shared driveway that punctured our neighbor’s expensive sports car tire, Greg didn’t hesitate to pay to replace it (and maintain neighborly peace in the process).  We would definitely use them again.

You Won’t Be Disappointed

I found Penn through some friends who were very pleased with their large renovation.  Tate Smith headed up my kitchen/family room renovation and I can’t say enough good things about the company.  They did what they said they were going to do when they said they were going to do it.  I knew up front all of the costs that went into their estimate, so if I decided to go with a more expensive appliance, there was no surprise.  The work was all top-notch and Tate gave lots of great practical guidance.  The subs all did great work and I never felt concerned leaving my house for the day while the job went on.  Can’t wait to use them again!

A Dream Come True

We love the wonderful aspects to our home which are the results of projects completed by Penn Carpentry. We used Penn for two big projects:the first being a major raising of our roof to create 7 rooms, to add an awesome screened porch and 5 months later to add a slate side porch, remodel a bathroom, raise a ceiling and to remove walls to create an open area. From the initial planning stages to the completion of all projects,the process went very smoothly.Penn Carpentry showed a genuine interest and was eager to please. Greg patiently listened to our many questions and promptly responded. We were treated to Greg’s can-do attitude, regular updates, open communication and his valuable sharing of ideas to assist in our decision making. Penn was within budget and the projects were completed timely.In addition to this, the sub-contractors and the retail resources  were excellent. So naturally, we highly recommend Penn Carpentry!

Penn Carpentry is awesome!We have had several contractors do work for us over the years, but now will use no one but Penn.On time, in budget, responsive, great work.Can’t say enough about how wonderful they are (especially in an industry where the norm is not to return calls, not to be in budget, and not to be on time).You couldn’t do better than Penn!

Hanging out on our wonderful Screened Porch

We have spent hours and hours on our wonderful screen porch that Penn Carpentry designed and built for us.  The porch blends nicely with the rest of our house and gives us the ability to enjoy the outside without totally being outside.  The kids love to play on the porch and the pets love to lounge out there as well.  Penn Carpentry brought creative ideas to the table when designing the porch.  They helped us control the cost of the construction and delivered a quality product on schedule.  We highly recommend Penn Carpentry and will use them in the future for home additions and remodeling.

Great Basement Renovation

We were very happy with the job Greg Penn did for us in finishing out the basement of our 1930s Tudor.  His crew was very professional and we feel like we got a great value. We plan to use Penn Carpentry again for our next remodeling project!

Kitchen Remodel

Penn Carpentry remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago.  They did a quality job within budget and on time!!!!  I would definitely use them again.

Reliable, Honest, & Proficient

Penn Carpentry did a pretty major renovation for us, including a new upstairs, screened porches, and assorted updates. They were affordable, and finished nearly a month ahead of schedule. They were easy to deal with, made every effort to please us, and employed excellent tradesmen and sub-contractors. We would use them again and recommend them to friends.

Would recommend to family and friends

We drew up plans with an architect (Richard Stevens, Decatur) for taking a 2 BR-1BA 1950 ranch and adding a master suite, a new utility closet and laundry room, a large screened porch, small deck and opening up the interior (knocking down walls, changing ceilings and moving and redoing kitchen).  Our architect had used Penn for some of his own house projects and we called some people we knew had used them but were not on Penn’s reference lists.  We liked what we heard (on time, on budget, good quality) and their budget was reasonable compared to three other bids.  They are a cost-plus contractor, but have years of experience with such contracts.  In our case, we were in the house on time (even though there were lots of delays because of rain) and on budget.  There were some minor glitches along the way (as in all house renovations), but all were handled professionally and satisfactorily.  There was nothing we requested that was not fulfilled.  We are very detail-oriented and need a lot of communication to feel comfortable that things are going as planned.  Tate, who led our project, was easy to get a hold of and responsive. Based on their track record, we trust that they will indeed honor their 12-month warranty. In the end, we are very happy with the quality and are enjoying our new home.  If we had to do another renovation, we would use Penn Carpentry again.

Highly recommended

Our renovation experience was awesome! We are now enjoying our new space and doing our best not to gloat to friends who warned us about living in our basement while our top floor was expanded and renovated. Our project was completed right on time and almost exactly on budget. Greg told us exactly what fixtures and features we needed to decide on, and he gave us great guidance when we needed it; so all the decision making that we’d been told would be so stressful turned out to be part of a fun and memorable experience. Greg also updated us on a regular basis about timing and budget issues, so we knew there wouldn’t be any surprises at the end. We highly recommend Penn Carpentry, and we’re looking forward to a basement renovation in the near future.

Screen Porch

Penn Carpentry did an excellent job on our screen porch.  It’s not the typical design, and they did a great job matching it up to our 1930’s home so that it doesn’t look like an add on, rather something originally on the house.  We spend many hours on the porch, and think of Greg and Tate and the great work they did.  It’s a showcase.  Thanks.

First addition experience…

We selected Penn Carpentry based on their professionalism and sincere recommendations from prior clients.  We felt comfortable signing a contract knowing that clients had repeatedly used their services.  The construction went as seamlessly as we could have expected with minimal changes in estimates.  Their sub-contractors were friendly and respectfull of the fact that we were living in the portion of the house that was not being renovated.  We would use them again, and highly recommend them to others.

Bathroom Renovation

Our renovated bathroom is even better than we imagined it would be.  Greg was very helpful in providing the name of a person for me to work with at each of the places I needed to visit to pick out fixtures, cabinets, tile, etc.  Having an estimate of cost helped in selection of the products I needed.  The sub-contractors could not have been nicer or more professional.  Since I am home a great deal of the day, I had many opportunities to interact with them.  If we need to have any work done in the future, we will definitely use Penn Carpentry again.

Kitchen and Bathroom Renovations

Friends recommended Penn Carpentry when I was redoing my kitchen.  It was a great recommendation.  I have used Penn Carpentry for a number of projects, including a new kitchen, new bathroom and general work around the house.  The quality of work is fantastic, they show up when they say they are going to, stick to a budget (my “while you’re at it could you just do…” don’t count!).  Highly recommend them for projects both big and small.

We used Penn Carpentry for a major project…adding a second story to our home.  I was very impressed with the professionalism and the ability to stay on a timeline and on budget.  We plan to use them again soon for another big project.

Quality work and on Schedule!

Penn Carpentry did an almost total renovation of our first floor.  First a new office and then entire rework of our kitchen and living areas.  We moved and removed walls, replaced floors, fireplaces, windows, cabinetry and appliances.  We gave Greg a time frame and the job was completed 2 weeks early and the finished product is fabulous!  We will definitely use them again when we do our master and upstairs in the near future

Professional  and great quality!

Greg Penn completed a master bath remodel for us. They completely gutted the area, took in 2 hall closets and built us a new bathroom with 2-vanity sinks, tile shower with glass enclosure and separate soaking tub. We got a separate water closet and ended up with a decent size master closet. Greg was very responsive, the subcontractors all showed up when they were scheduled and completed the work in the estimated time frame. Greg was very picky about quality work and had some people come back to redo work until it was to our satisfaction. We would definitely recommend Penn Carpentry and will use them again if we have the opportunity.

Masterful Job

Penn Carpentry completed a second story addition to my 80 year old in town home.  They did an great job and ended on time and under budget.

We have used Penn Carpentry over the past 10 yrs on 2 different houses – addition of master bedroom and 2 bathrooms in one; addition of family room, MBR, deck and kitchen and basement remodeling for the second home  They have always been wonderful to work with – under budget, considerate of interruptions to home life, constant updating on progress – timeline – scheduling of workers, helpful suggestions, patient with homeowner’s indecisiveness, etc.  I cannot say enough good things about them!!

Wonderful Experience

We did a whole house reno on a 1959 ranch style home.  Penn did our project as design and build.  Every step of the way, Penn was super responsive, great at listening to our needs and working with us.  They brought out great subs!  Work was done every day to keep the project on time and on budget.  Greg Penn is a perfectionist.  He stays on top of his subs to make sure the work is done right.  He spotted and fixed problems we did not even notice.  I would recommend these guys to anyone looking for a responsible and responsive GC.  Would definitely use them again for any future projects.

Trustworthy and delivers

Penn Carpentry recently completed a kitchen renovation for us. The result is spectacular. This was the most low-stress renovation we’ve gone through. Because of Greg’s commitment to high-quality work, even when snafus arose (which they will in any project), we had confidence they would be worked out, and they were. The project was more expensive than we anticipated (mostly because we picked more expensive cabinets), but Greg has a great handle on how much subs cost. And the subs, every last one of them, were pleasant and easy to have around. On the administrative side, Carol, the business manager, is an excellent communicator and goes out of her way to provide information or responses to questions. So we are very pleased and will certainly have Penn bid on our next project.

We just finished a basement renovation with Penn Carpentry and they did a great job.  The end result was terrific and was exactly what we wanted.  We enjoyed working with Penn.

Reliable professionals

Greg Penn and his partner Tate Smith took on a substantial renovation based on an architect’s design, adding a second floor to a 90-year-old house with beams that had sagged, leaving the walls and floors uneven. From the beginning, they proved to be helpful and creative, suggesting changes that maintained the integrity of the design while saving money. They were not the cheapest of the half dozen contractors whose bids we sought, but they were not the most expensive either. They were certainly the most attentive and straightforward. They didn’t try to sell their services. Instead, they offered a clear-eyed assessment of what we could get for the dollars we had, and how long it would take. They did not over promise.

Tate, who ran this particular job, ensured that we came in on time and under budget. He was attentive to detail, and so reliable. As with any project, there were surprises and mishaps. But they were few and none ruffled Tate, who addressed every issue to our satisfaction without complaint. We entered this project with great apprehension, but we couldn’t have been in better hands. Penn is a small and experienced company with a stable set of skilled subcontractors. Hire them if you can get them.

Very Trustworthy

Excellent experience on a major renovation of an older home including kitchen, family room, master bath and guest bath. Greg provided great guidance on the many design issues and the finished product exceeded our expectations. Really a pleasure to work with as were all his subcontractors.

Bathroom Renovation

Really well done master bathroom renovation.  From architectural development and material sourcing to polite and thoughtful third-party subs, we are very happy with the work.  There was never one single day where I came home from work to an unexpected mess or a “surprise”.  The communication was superb and solution-oriented, while all expectations were met.  Two thumbs up and thanks to Tate and Penn Carpentry for the new master bathroom.

Outstanding customer service and expertise

I just finished a full home renovation and cannot say enough great things about Penn Carpentry. Before this process began, I was terrified of the renovation and all the possibilities of things that could go wrong. Looking back on it now, I can’t remember one thing that went wrong.  What I do remember are Greg and Carol Penn. Of course, there were challenges along the way, but Greg and Carol stayed right by my side for every step making it as easy as possible for me. Greg ensured that I was well informed on the construction process and helped walk me through anything that I didn’t understand (which he had to do a lot!).  Carol was phenomenal. She made sure all documents were in order for the bank at all times and provided impeccable communication so that construction could continue on task and on time.  Penn Carpentry did a fabulous job. They were honest, reliable, determined and committed. Greg Penn built my house as though it were his own and shepherded me through the “scary” aspects of renovation like I was part of his family.
